Space Explorer Extraordinaire on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays

“Hey man, wanna hang out tonight? The whole gang from the lunch table is getting together to get our C.S.I on.”  My dreamfriends talk like that.

“Sorry dude. I have to work.  Raincheck?”

“Aw, bummer, man.”

“”Yeah, I know.  I’m so pissed.”  We parted ways, my friend with a frown, and myself with a sneaky, hidden smile. I didn’t want to hang out with them.  I was so much more excited to go to work.

Because my work was in space.

Every other day after class, I would drive down to the NASA headquarters in Minnesota (such a thing exists in my unconscious mind) and clock in for my shift.

This particular day I put my backpack down in my NASA locker, grabbed my space gear, and went down to the launch room. I slipped into my shiny space suit, which was shiny and awesome, but not too awesome because I was only a test rider—the nicer suits went to the mucky mucks who actually get to explore up there.  My job simply was to ride up into space, go around the moon to make sure everything was cool, and come back to earth before dinner.

I made some small talk with Miriam, the homely but sassy lady who pushes the button for my take off. Then I plopped myself into my rocket ship after making sure my iPod was charged. What would I do today? Spend some time facebook stalking?  Munch on a sandwich? Color? Do homework? Probably not the last one.

[Yes, my space shuttle has wheels. Got a problem with that?]

And I rode to the moon and back, which of course only took a few hours, and returned to earth to get back to my dorm room.  Just an average day in the life of a minimum-wage space explorer.

  1. Miriam's not homely....maybe a bad hair cut, but not homely! I love that she's sassy and calls you 'shugga'. (Is that a southern accent that I detect?) Miriam and I would've been friends if I was in your dream! Everyone needs a friend like Miriam!Mom

  2. you would be friends with her. it's funny, mom, that you said that, because when I drew Miriam, i realized that she's a copy of a picture that you drew for me when i asked you to draw something. a long time ago--don't ask me how I remember this--i realized that i had never really seen you draw anything and i asked you to draw a person for me. and you drew a woman with hair just like that. there you go.

  3. LOL! This cracks me up! What can I say? :-) I guess I am only a carrier of artistic abilities and I passed that gene on to Lindsay. Just like I am only a carrier of the music gene....I passed that on to you!

Miriam really does look like my Pictionary woman drawings!

    Your creative carrier,
    Mom

  4. I just re-read my last comment....I hope you don't read it like sour-grapes. I have my own creative abilities, but Lord knows it's not singing or drawing! :-) Take out the two "only"s and it sounds better.

  6. YEAH! WHAT CHRISTIE SAID!

I wish there were more dialogues happening in other blogs too. I love reading what other people think and what ideas are inspired by the writings in blogs....but it doesn't happen very often.

    Your Mamablogga
(doesn't that just roll off your tongue?)

  7. hehe, i also enjoy how these comment areas turn into little discussion forums. it's fun. (beats the heck out of facebook.)

you know, i'm not sure if Mamablogga rolls of my tongue as easily as it does yours. it usually takes me a few tries before i can say it out loud correctly.
